A living room table is, as the name suggests, a table placed in the living room. This can be a coffee table or a side table. Depending on the space, a dining table can also be considered a living room table if the dining and living areas form a single spatial unit.
No matter what kind of living room table it is, the tabletop of each one can be special due to the type of grain, shape, and edge. All these tables can be manufactured as so-called live edge tables if the top is made of solid wood. A live edge or natural edge is a table edge that captures the unique shape of a tree's lengthwise growth, making it unique – such a natural edge alone transforms the table into a unique piece.
The table most frequently referred to as a living room table is certainly the sofa table or coffee table. As an essential part of a seating group, usually consisting of a sofa and armchairs, it serves to place drinks, snacks, books, magazines, decorative items, and the remote control. It should not only be functional but also look good and match the rest of the living area's decor.
In addition to the shape, the height and size of the coffee table are also important. A sofa table is significantly lower than a normal table, usually between 40 and 50 cm. The seating surface on the sofa should be at the same height or slightly higher than the table itself, to comfortably and ergonomically reach the items on the table.
A distance of approx. 45 cm between the table and the couch is recommended to be able to stand up comfortably and still have the table and the items on it within easy reach.
Another important living room table is the side table – whether as a single piece or in a set. It can serve as a supplement to the coffee table and, for example, act as a shelf next to an armchair. Or, especially in small living rooms, it is a space-saving and flexible alternative to the larger sofa table – quickly moved or completely put away, usually lighter and smaller and also slightly higher than a normal coffee table.
