A sofa table or coffee table is a piece of furniture in the living area that complements armchairs and sofas. It is used to place drinks, snacks, books, magazines, decorative items, and the remote control, and should not only be functional but also look good and match the rest of the living area's decor.
In addition to the shape, for example, a trendy live-edge sofa table, the height and size of the coffee table are also important.
Sofa tables are significantly lower than a normal table, usually between 40 and 50 cm. The seating surface on the sofa should be at the same height or minimally higher than the table itself, in order to comfortably and ergonomically reach the items on the table. A living room table that is too high would also be bad, as it might block the view of the TV or create a visual barrier to people also sitting in the seating group.
A distance of approx. 45 cm between the table and the sofa is recommended to be able to get up comfortably and still have the table and the items on it within reach.
In addition to height, the length and width of a sofa table are also important. The table should be adapted in its format and shape to the living room suite. A rule of thumb says that the length of the sofa table should be about half the length of the sofa. Disproportionately large coffee tables can quickly appear bulky and destroy the overall impression of the living room suite.
One must consider the available space and the distances to other pieces of furniture. When purchasing new furniture, it is therefore best to first set up the sofa and armchairs and then lay out a placeholder for the table with cardboard or newspaper to get an impression of the later size and to get the sofa table in the appropriate size.
There are hardly any restrictions on the shape of a sofa table. The most common is still a square tabletop, with or without a shelf or additional drawers, but there are also round, oval, triangular, multi-sided or organically shaped tables – a wide selection for every taste and furnishing style. Sofa tables with live edge are particularly trendy, bringing a natural look to the living area without visually 'overloading' the table.
The sofa table is definitely an important part of the living area and plays a major role in complementing the living room suite. The available space primarily determines the size and shape of the living room table.
