Care tips for a live edge table or solid wood furniture in general – how to do it right?
To care for a live edge table, there are a few things to keep in mind:
- Use a slightly damp, lint-free cloth (preferably cotton) or a sponge to regularly wipe down the table and remove dust. Wipe gently with the cloth in the direction of the grain. The soft surface of cotton cloths will not damage the wood surface and is therefore recommended for gentle care. Any residual moisture should be absorbed with a dry cloth.
- Do not use sharp objects or harsh cleaning agents to clean the table, as these could cause scratches.
- Immediately remove spilled liquids before moisture penetrates the wood.
- Do not place hot or wet objects directly on the surface, as this can lead to unsightly light spots that are difficult to remove.
- Do not expose the table to direct sunlight or strong heat, as this can cause the wood to swell or warp. Wood darkens over time, which is completely normal. To avoid uneven brightness, the table should be exposed to light as evenly as possible. Partial coverings with doilies or mats that cover only a part of the table can also lead to lighter spots if they remain in the same places for long enough.
- Use coasters or placemats to protect the dining table from scratches and stains.
- Damage or scratches can be filled and repaired with a wood repair kit or pen.
Please note: Temperature and humidity are factors that should not be ignored for solid wood furniture. Wood is a living material and is constantly working.
Acacia wood, for example, is naturally very robust and extremely resistant to fungi and pests. In the event of extreme temperature fluctuations or near a strong heat source (e.g., fireplace or heater), acacia wood contracts sharply and expands again when it cools. This can cause the table to warp or the tabletop to crack. Therefore, the table should not be placed directly near a fireplace or heater.
Humidity also has a major impact on the condition of solid wood furniture. Dry heating air makes the wood brittle and rough and can lead to increased cracking. Houseplants or a humidifier can help. These simple measures can ensure that small cracks in the wood retract.
